Cross-border tourist mobility as seen by residents of the Karelian borderlands: COVID-19 restrictions

This article offers a new approach to evaluating the significance of cross-border tourism for residents border region Karelia amid COVID-19 restrictions. The work draws on data municipal-level survey region’s population (575 people), conducted by author in collaboration with Dr Ekaterina Shlapeko 2021. Analysis results has confirmed customariness tourist mobility Karelians and essential role it plays their lives. These are manifested regular trips neighbouring state, frequent contacts Finnish travellers, marked preferences network organisations. restrictions affected routines Karelian borderlands more severely than those people living inner municipalities or regional capital. findings study provide comprehensive picture (border tourism) point spatial differences perception phenomenon border, interior urban municipalities. When applied practice, proposed gives an opportunity widen range possible administrative decisions can serve as tool economic policy tourism.
